Camp
Adams - Molalla, Oregon: Each year, FLGBTQC sponsors a mid-winter
Gathering, and this year, for the first time, it will be located in
the Pacific Northwest. From the edge of the country, we call Friends
to remember that our journey began on the edge. This will be a time
for deep reflection on spiritual origins, and an opportunity to
discern how they illuminate the many challenges of our own time.
Our
theme, Faith Calls for Justice, on the Same Terms, reflects the
longstanding witness for justice at the heart of the Quaker
tradition. We will particularly reflect on the testimony of Equality,
how it shaped our journey in the past, and where it will take us in
the future. FLGBTQC was founded when we were still very much on the
edge of Quaker society. As we now find ourselves in the center of
many meetings we will ask how we are called to constantly move from
comfort back to edge where we truly belong. From the edge, the view
is amazing!
We
shall gather at Camp Adams, the sprawling, rustic evergreen camp
owned by our good friends at the United Church of Christ. Camp Adams
provides a forested 210-acre recreational retreat center in the
foothills area of Molalla, Oregon, 35 miles south of Portland (about
45 minutes travel time), and about the same distance from Mt. Hood.
Camp
Adams offers beds for up to 150 guests, and furnishes the varied
sorts of gathering spaces we need. The on-site kitchen staff is
friendly and flexible with dietary needs, and the camp uses
scent-free cleaning methods. Key portions of the camp are wheelchair
accessible. More a camp than a resort,
A Camp Adams retreat is
less about reserving private space and more about sharing community.
You'll be warm, dry, rested, and well-fed, but you may not have
chocolates waiting on your pillow! With a few exceptions couples
should generally expect to occupy single bunks in a shared dormitory
space. We have contracted for a minimum of 100 people at Camp Adams.
If this quota is met, there will also be the option of somewhat
more upscale cottages four miles away at Camp Colton (for a slightly
higher price).
The Camp cooks are
steeped in the local food culture, and are ready and willing to offer
feed meals that will make us both healthy and happy. Meals will be
primarily vegan and gluten free with lots of local produce - and
Bob's Red Mill (premium flours of all sorts) is right down the
road so expect yummy baked goods!
Camp Adams is a
year-around site for children's camps, and we'll have a
program for all of our children. We are working to surround kids
with other kids of their own ages, so please let
Neil Fullagar
know the age of your children.
The whole community of
FLGBTQC makes a gift to bring Mid-Winter Gathering together. Each
person's presence is a spiritual gift. And in the end, these gifts
return to Quaker meetings everywhere, when we return refreshed,
enlightened, or inspired. Therefore, we seek to make Gathering
accessible to everyone, regardless of the ability to pay. If you can
make an additional contribution to help others attend, please do so.
If you find the cost prohibitive, we encourage you to apply to your
Monthly or Yearly Meeting for assistance, and then to let us know if
you need additional help. FLGBTQC clerks will award travel
assistance. Contact them before December 30!
